Script- Positioning Concepts

  • Temporal Span: 22 days
  • Date: Wednesday 1st December – Wednesday 22nd December (Summer Solstice) 2021
  • Site within site: Fort Lane laneway itself

Key Concepts:

WHAT IT MEANS TO ME. HOW IT RELATES TO SITE.

Projecting-

This can reflect presentation of a moment on a screen in its literal term or a forecast of the future based on current trends in time. I plan to use projection in my project through installation/exhibition pieces which project life into space through cinematic worlds and the history and speculative future of Fort Lane.

projecting an atmosphere, literally projecting

Reflecting-

This is the mirroring of an image, sound, surface of light or even heat onto a body or object without its absorption. It plays with the concept of surface and can be used to manipulate, distort, and play around with portals of reality. Reflection can also be contemplation and thoughtfulness which I want to provoke in my project.

Speculating-

This is the theory, concept, or belief of what the future is to be. It is a prediction using intuition using insights for the nature of in this example the space of Fort Lane to be in nature, materiality and in context of the wider site. I want to design a glimpse of a speculative future in the laneway to position the public and challenge their views on how the space has changes and where it may be headed. It’s a portal into fantasy and imagination- a dream like space.

Hallucinating-

This is the act of experiencing or perceiving something which is not present or materialised. It can be very realistic or deceiving. I want to use it in my project to play on parallel worlds from different time periods of the site (50 years before and after the current date) for viewers to immerse in and see or hallucinate these alternate views of the laneway.

Metaphysical-

This is an abstract theory/philosophy which involves concepts of being, knowing, identity, time, and space (existence). I am very interested in phycology, particularly consciousness and influence over people’s lives. Spatial design can have a profound impact and influence on how people think, feel, and behave and can question or challenge their beliefs in certain ways. In my project I wish to question public life on their relationship with time, with the site, and more importantly who they are and why they are.

Temporal Vocab

Contemporaneously-

Existing, occurring, or originating during the same time. Past, present and future Fort Lane translated simultaneously

Melting memory-

Additional Project Terms

Experience- An occurrence or event which leaves a lasting impression- typically where one gets involved or absorbed in the atmosphere of the space/environment. I want to provoke a memorable and lasting experience through the execution of lighting, shadow, projection, and mirroring. My project aims to entice and immerse the publics. It hold a temporal element as the space shifts through time and the experience will change depending on site conditions and quantity of public experiencing the space at a time (intimacy).

Manipulation– This is a social influence which aims to change one’s thoughts or behaviours with purposeful influence to change. In an art sense I’d like to do this by manipulating, distorting, and blurring the realms of reality to make one question what is real? What is present? And what is the past and future of this laneway. The types of material will change according to which materials are used to manipulate image and atmosphere of the laneway which will also change over time through factors such as sun light intensity and direction, shadow, reflection and projection.

Atmosphere- This is the overall tone or mood of a place or situation. Atmosphere is a prevalent quality in my design as it sets the memorable impression on experiencers. The atmosphere id like to convey is dreamlike, whimsical and wonderous which challenges the publics to position themselves to the site and in time.

Allegory- As a literary device, an allegory is a narrative in which a character, place, or event is used to deliver a broader message about real-world issues and occurrences

The Script

Identify where you will locate your design intervention and how this creates a new narrative

Develop a script for your design project (what will take place). include a tagline in your proposal

Brainstorm

  • ANZAC tribute through cinematic experience such as lighting, projection, reflection
  • Warping of time- past present future fort lane and questions/positions the public in relation to the context
  • What do our dreams speak of. What is our metaphysical world what is our reality if we concentrate on what we and experiencing at every moment of the day and the night.
  • Mundus vult decipi, ergo decipiatur- The world wants to be deceived, so let it be deceived
  • Particularly highlighting the site’s stature as it has been a present structure for decades before us and most probably decades after. Architecture is the art of designing structures, some of which are imbedded in history and act as a time capsule.

First Script:

Sun and Moon- day to night transition, shadow and projection– passing of time, closer to death

The repetition of the the days transition to night is a reminder of the routine we are stuck in as we work through life. Light and dark, dark and light are parallel- and in two short moments they merge to create and a transition of colour which indicates stark change and a shift in time. From dusk to dawn- We celebrate the death of the sun, welcome the night and wait for a new day to come.

What is the essence of time? We always know its there yet we can never see it. Its ever reigning presence haunts us as a reminder that death is approaching. The pendulum of the clock – a stand-in for the human heart, which beats with its rhythm just as the pendulum swung from side to side – may not start going again.

An exhibition is to take place on Auckland’s Fort Lane which will take publics on a journey through space and time with the constant reminder that as we transition from day to night, we are brought closer to the end of our lives. Once we accept this fact, we may be inspired to live a more fulfilled life. Momento morri- remember you will die is a humbling latin phrase which goes back to ancient roman history for for warriors to remember they are mortal.

Design Intervention Documentation

produce documentstion of your design intervention.

Sketch design,

  • Simulate day and night with artifical ceiling ( or show a fantasy/scifi sky etc.)
  • tree/vine changing through time each day and having climactic bloom (could be fantasy), 10 min show like, have it on repeat at different time in the day
  • key words – confusing (gradually change, people curious to what it is/going to be), wonder, dreamy, whimscal
  • maui and the sun and other legends
