Feedback

Susan Hedges

Question posed to me: “What provokes this exploration or thinking through this threshold moment?”

“The long, linear space and the old surrounding buildings show a lot of character and history which holds an essence of time. I wanted to reflect that into us as existentialist theories interest me very much and I think this is a topic which should be talked about, discussed or provoked. I think everyone’s take on this project will be very individual and different. My project aims to reflect the contemplation of life and death, the process, journey, the beauty and the sadness of it. The concepts of my project and the way its portrayed is completely up for interpretation.”

  • Loved the thinking through time and longevity
  • Lovely long section and straight perspectives
  • Thinking and detailing of maintenance and upkeep back into the pot holders, seating and trellis work – might be good to see some cross-sections rather longitudinal sections (cool as a final set of drawings).
  • Cool project to stir up thought as it is a topic many people get scared to think about.

  • It raises a lot of really interesting questions about how you can use spatial design to create these quite existential experiences
  • The statement you had at the beginning of the presentation around wanting to really use this installation as a way to desensitize people around the fear of death.
  • What’s really smart in your design is you’ve used a strategy of the natural world and plant life as a way for showing the natural cycle of growth, decay and that beginning again.
  • Question or provocation: The garden looks quite manicured with the beautiful white flowers, maybe you want to show the rot and decay side of things? Maybe you are portraying quite a sanitized version of death and that experience. Maybe see you if you want to open your project and practice up to the messier aspect of it.
  • Open trellis- to think about: Do you want to manipulate the atmosphere more strongly because its kind of open? Do you have sections where its closed off and you can have really strong lighting shifts?
  • Wonderful use of the space working with this quite linear approach and journey through the space. Do you have different moments where things start to shift? Are there other kind of moments you want to happen on that journey?

Reflection

I was quite happy with my feedback. I’m glad my concept came across strongly and I was able to provoke thought around life and death through my project. The way I am going about my project through nature and plants was a good shift in my project as it carries across my message well. I was surprised that the concepts of rot and decay stuck however that my project may be too sanitized even though it is a celebration of life and over time the plants can decay- maybe this is an intentional occurring towards the end of the projects placement if it isn’t permanent. I now need to improve on my drawings to communicate my design even clear and create a sense of atmosphere with lighting and planting. Its also an interesting provocation to think about rot and decay being portrayed in my project.

  • Contrast in perspectives
  • Atmosphere- lighting shifts and close up detail such as smelling or touching flowers
  • Construction Drawings
  • Cross section
  • Image composition, negative space, consistency of page layout
  • Rot and decay perspective
  • Include dimensions
