Hard Materials

Red Clay Brick

Walls/Portals

This material will be used to create the walls on either end of the laneway. I have chosen to use recycled and worn red clay brick to fit in to the site context and material history. It will emphasize the element of stumbling through this cinematic world of existentialism symbolized by a linear garden acting as it’s poetics.

Radiata Pine Wood (Stained)

Boardwalk

This material will be recycled, stained dark and installed above the length of the laneway to create a boardwalk. This will create a hollow sound when people walk through the space create a sense of lightness when contemplating our permanence to this earth. Our roots aren’t quite grounded to this life as the foundations of many buildings and trees are.

Radiata pine is a versatile evergreen conifer native to southern California and northern Mexico. It is the most widely planted pine in the world and the most popular commercial timber species in New Zealand.

Presentation Colour Palette

I have used a neutral colour palette as it reflects the earthiness of nature. It also embodies undertones of skin colour and race, how we come from many different backgrounds yet we will all suffer the same fate. The fear of death however may be prominent in most as it is a natural reaction of the human spirit and the end may always seem frightening. This colour pallet choice in my presentation is subtle and doesn’t draw much attention to itself. It lets the green foliage within my design, as well as the night perspectives and lighting stand out. These colours also reflect the flipside to nature which is the rot and decay which will come in time. This aspect of nature is also a beautiful phenomenon.
